Chapter 24 - Chapter 24 - The Anonymous Letter

A heavy parchment envelope arrived at my penthouse lobby on a rainy Tuesday morning, lacking any return address or recognizable postmark. Inside was a single note written on cheap, water-stained paper, bearing handwriting that made my heart skip a brief, involuntary beat. It was from Tyler, penned from the federal holding facility upstate where he was serving his sentence. “Liv, I know you’ll probably throw this away, but I have nothing left. Every day in here is a nightmare. Mom is sick, Greg’s life is ruined, and I realize now what I threw away. You were everything, and I was a coward. If you have any mercy left in your heart, please just let me hear your voice one last time.” I stared at the frantic ink strokes for a long, silent minute. There was a time when those words would have melted my resolve, triggering my compulsive need to fix, rescue, and carry everyone across the finish line. But looking at the letter now, I felt only a profound, hollow emptiness. The man who stood by smiling while his family threw me into freezing water didn't exist anymore—or rather, he was finally facing the true reflection of his own choices. I walked over to the stainless-steel shredder, fed the paper into its metallic jaws, and watched it dissolve into gray dust. Mercy isn't enabling self-destruction; true mercy is letting adults face the unmitigated consequences of their own actions.
