Chapter 1 - The Blood-Stained Pavement and the Man Who Owns the Night

The biting wind howling off the Hudson River felt like a million tiny shards of glass slicing into my frostbitten skin. Underneath the cavernous shadow of the abandoned overpass, the world narrowed down to two things: the agonizing, white-hot throb of the injuries across my back, and the faint, fragile heartbeats of the two newborn girls pressed desperately against my hollow chest. I was half-dead, bleeding onto the frozen concrete, my tattered coat soaked through with ice and winter rain.

Hours earlier, I had been a wife in name only. My husband, a man obsessed with legacy and bloodlines, had stared at the twin girls I had just birthed in agony as if they were trash. “A curse,” he had sneered before allowing his associates to drag me out into the sub-zero Manhattan night because I failed to give him a male heir.

As consciousness began to slip away, swallowed by the black abyss of hypothermia and blood loss, the deep rumble of high-powered engines cut through the winter wind. A convoy of heavy, matte-black armored SUVs slid to a halt near the concrete barrier. Doors flew open. Heavy boots crunched against gravel.

"Boss, over here! Something’s by the pillar!" a gruff voice barked.

Through the blur of my failing vision, a towering figure approached. Elias Vance. Even in the forgotten slums, every soul knew his name. He was the cold, untouchable kingpin who controlled New York’s criminal underworld, a man whose enemies vanished into thin air before sunrise. I expected a gun. I expected a final, merciless blow.

Instead, Elias dropped straight to his knees on the freezing pavement, ignoring the mud and ice staining his expensive designer trousers. His sharp, predatory eyes swept over my bloodied form, then darted down to the bundle clutched inside my coat. Two tiny, frost-bitten faces, gray from the cold.

"Boss, we should call an ambulance," one of his armed guards urged, his hand hovering over his holster.

"They won't make it waiting for one," Elias commanded, his voice deep, commanding, and absolute.

Before anyone could object, Elias unbuttoned his heavy wool coat, ripped open his shirt, and pressed both of my freezing babies directly against the raw warmth of his bare chest, using his own body heat as a shield against the blizzard. Then, with terrifying strength, he scooped my broken, bleeding body up into his arms. I weighed almost nothing, and as he lifted me, I felt the sudden, fierce tightening of his jaw.

"Who did this to her?" Elias demanded, his voice dropping into a register so dark it made his own men step back.

"Find out," he ordered, before carrying us into the armored belly of his vehicle as the convoy tore away into the night.
