Chapter 2 - The Penthouse Sanctuary and the Terrifying Truth

For three long days, I drifted between burning fevers and terrifying nightmares of the frozen overpass. When my eyes finally fluttered open, the harsh fluorescent lights of a hospital were missing, replaced instead by the soaring, glass-walled luxury of a penthouse overlooking the snow-dusted Manhattan skyline.
Panic seized my chest instantly. I gasped, trying to sit up, my muscles tearing in protest. "My girls? Where are my girls?"
"Both alive. And sleeping soundly," a deep, smooth voice answered from the corner of the room.
I turned my head. Sitting in a leather wingback chair beside the towering floor-to-ceiling window was Elias Vance. He held a leather-bound file in one hand, his piercing eyes locked onto me with an intense, unreadable curiosity.
The relief was so overwhelming my entire body collapsed back against the goose-down pillows. But the relief was instantly replaced by cold, paralyzing terror. I gripped the silk sheets. "He'll come for them. My husband... he won't let us go."
Elias’s eyes hardened into chips of obsidian glass. "Who?"
For a long moment, the words stuck in my throat. Then, the dam broke. I sobbed, spilling the horrific truth into the quiet room. I told him about the forced marriage, the obsession with a male heir, the betrayal in the delivery room, and how my husband had allowed other men to punish me before tossing us into the snow to die because "daughters weren't worth feeding."
As I spoke, Elias didn't flinch. But the air around him grew heavy, thick with a lethal, suffocating aura of absolute wrath.
Before he could speak, a faint cry drifted from the adjoining nursery suite. I instinctively tried to swing my legs over the side of the bed, but Elias was already standing, moving with terrifying speed.
Just as he reached the bedroom door, one of his lead enforcers burst into the penthouse, panting heavily, holding a ringing burner phone.
"Boss, we tracked the husband," the enforcer said, his eyes darting nervously toward me. "And... you need to hear this."
Elias took the phone, pressed it to his ear, and listened for thirty seconds. His expression shifted into something so terrifyingly dark that even his hardened guard took a step back.

"What?" I whispered, my voice trembling as my blood turned to ice. "What is he saying?"
Elias slowly lowered the phone, looking at me with a look of profound, chilling realization. "Your husband isn't coming because he wants his children back, Ava."
