Chapter 5 - A New Kingdom and the Warmth of Spring

Six months later, the bitter winter of New York had finally surrendered to the vibrant, golden warmth of a June morning.
The penthouse overlooking Central Park was filled with the soft, joyful sounds of gurgling laughter and tiny footsteps. I stood by the bay window, watching the morning sun paint the skyline in brilliant shades of amber and rose. In my arms, my daughters—now healthy, chubby-cheeked, and full of bright, curious life—played happily with a silver rattle.
My husband Marcus and his criminal associates were currently serving consecutive life sentences in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, their syndicate dismantled piece by piece by federal prosecutors working off the ironclad financial records Elias had handed over on a silver platter.
Footsteps approached softly from behind. A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around my waist, pulling me back against a warm, solid chest.
"Penny for your thoughts, Ava," Elias murmured, resting his chin softly on my shoulder as he kissed my cheek.
I leaned back into his embrace, closing my eyes as a profound, unshakable peace settled deep into my bones. "I was just thinking about that night under the overpass. About how close we came to the dark."
Elias turned me around gently in his arms, his dark eyes softening as he looked down at me, and then at the two little girls babbling happily in my arms. He reached out, gently brushing a stray lock of hair from my face.
May you like
"You were never going to the dark, Ava," Elias whispered, his voice steady and fiercely devoted. "I found you in the snow, but you saved me. This is our family now. And no storm on earth will ever touch you again."
I smiled, leaning up to press my lips softly against his. The past was frozen in the ice, but our future was burning bright, safe inside the kingdom we had built together.
