Chapter 12 - Whispers in the Boardroom

Word travels fast in Manhattan. By mid-morning, the financial blogs and tech columns were buzzing with anonymous leaks regarding the unraveling of the Vance family assets. Rumors swirled about shell companies, frozen trust funds, and a high-profile corporate divorce that made front-page news. Sitting at the head of the conference table, surrounded by my executive board, I listened as my chief financial officer outlined our quarterly growth projections without a single hitch or hidden liability.
“The restructuring is complete, Olivia,” my CFO reported, sliding the final audit sheet across the table. “All corporate accounts have been fully isolated from external interference. Your exposure is zero.”
“Good,” I replied, looking around the room at the brilliant, dedicated minds who actually helped build this empire. Not a single person here had ever treated me like a convenience or a cash cow. They respected the late-night strategy sessions, the relentless product launches, and the sheer grit it took to scale a tech conglomerate from a two-person startup into an industry titan.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city surged with relentless energy. I remembered the cold, biting mountain air of the lake house and the cruel laughter of Tyler’s cousins echoing over the water. How naive I had been to think that buying their affection would ever buy their loyalty. True respect isn't purchased with bank transfers; it is commanded through unyielding strength.
As the meeting wrapped up, my executive assistant handed me a sealed envelope delivered straight to the front desk. No return address. Just my name written in clumsy, frantic handwriting.
