Chapter 21 - Chapter 21 - The Shadow of the Past

The Malibu sun cast a golden haze over the Pacific, but even miles away from Manhattan, the echoes of the courtroom trial lingered like faint ghosts in the background. I sat at my teakwood desk, reviewing the latest quarterly reports for the Sovereign Trust, when a secure notification flashed across my laptop screen. It was an encrypted dossier from Victoria regarding residual assets tied to the Vance family’s hidden offshore accounts. Even after the federal convictions and prison sentences, it appeared Denise had managed to stash a final, hidden reserve of capital in a secondary shell company registered under a distant cousin's name. I stared at the data streams, realizing that toxic entitlement doesn't vanish overnight just because a judge bangs a gavel. It claws, it hides, and it waits for an opening. Arthur walked onto the terrace, offering a cup of green tea with a calm, reassuring smile. “Is there a complication, Mrs. Vance?” he asked, noting the slight furrow in my brow. “Nothing we can't handle, Arthur,” I replied, closing the laptop lid with a soft click. For years, I had let them dictate the terms of my existence, running myself ragged to satisfy an endless appetite for luxury and status. Now, looking out over the endless ocean, I knew that every loose end had to be tied off permanently. There could be no half-measures, no lingering loopholes, and no safe havens for financial predators. I picked up my phone, dialing Victoria’s direct extension. “Let’s dismantle the final shell company, Victoria. Leave them nothing.”
