Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Queen

Six months after the separation, the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was packed with the most influential corporate leaders, tech innovators, and venture capitalists in the country. The occasion was the annual Gala for Economic Empowerment, and as the keynote speaker and primary corporate sponsor, I stood backstage waiting to take the podium.
My emerald-green jumpsuit—the exact same one I had worn the night I was thrown into the lake—hung framed in glass inside my private office downtown, a permanent reminder of the moment I stopped being an enabler and started being a sovereign queen.
My phone buzzed. A brief text from an unknown Ohio number: I'm sorry, Liv. Can we please talk?
I didn't even blink. With a single press of my thumb, I blocked the number for good, letting it vanish into the void.
Arthur appeared beside me, adjusting my suit jacket with a respectful nod. “It’s time, Mrs. Vance. The room is yours.”
I took a deep breath, smoothing the lapels of my tailored white blazer, and stepped out from behind the velvet curtain into the blazing warmth of the stage lights. The applause rolled across the massive ballroom like a thunderous wave, hundreds of people standing to their feet in absolute, respectful silence.
I looked out across the sea of faces—powerful, fearless, independent. I didn't need a family name to define me anymore. I didn't need anyone's approval to sit at the table. I had built the table myself, and nobody would ever throw me off it again.

“Good evening,” I said, stepping up to the microphone, my voice echoing clear, steady, and unshakeable. “Tonight, I want to talk to you about power. Not the kind that comes from wealth or titles... but the kind that comes from knowing your own worth, and never letting anyone make you apologize for it.”
The applause roared back, shaking the crystal chandeliers above. And for the first time in my life, I smiled not just for the audience, but for myself.
