Chapter 2 - The Panic on the Deck

The silence that followed was absolute. Even the firepit seemed to quiet down, its flames shrinking into low, orange embers.
Denise stood up so fast her chair tipped backward, crashing onto the grass. Her face was flushed, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. “You... you did what? Are you insane? Do you know who my friends are? Do you know what kind of people we are?”
“I know exactly who you are,” I said, stepping closer to the edge of the deck, towering above them despite my wet clothes. “You’re a group of freeloaders sitting on a multi-thousand-dollar weekend getaway funded entirely by the woman you just humiliated.”
Greg leaped to his feet, his phone clattering onto the table. “You can’t just kick us out! It’s freezing out here! My golf clubs are inside! My clothes are in the master suite!”
“Then I suggest you start packing your golf clubs into your trunk,” I replied, turning my gaze to Tyler. He looked smaller now, standing under the dim patio lantern with his hands half-raised, as if trying to push back an invisible wall.
“Liv, honey,” Tyler stammered, taking a cautious step toward me. His tone shifted into that oily, pleading whine he used when he got caught flirting or mishandling corporate accounts. “Let’s just... let’s breathe. Okay? You’re upset. You’re cold. Let’s go inside, grab a drink, and you can sort this out with the rental company tomorrow. We don’t need to make a public spectacle out of a stupid joke.”
“A joke?” My voice rose, sharp as a shard of glass. “Your cousins literally threw me into freezing water while you stood there smiling and your brother filmed it! And you call it a joke?”
“It was just high spirits!” Denise shrieked, stepping forward, pointing a manicured finger right in my face. “You have no sense of humor, Olivia! You’ve been working yourself to death, bringing home all this money like it gives you the right to lord over a real family! Tyler is a Vance! He doesn't need to be bossed around by a woman who doesn't even know what unconditional family love means!”
I let out a cold, humorless laugh. “Unconditional family love? Is that what you call bleeding your son dry while he fails at every business venture he touches? Is that what you call letting me pay your husband’s knee replacement surgery and your daughter’s car lease while you sit around gossiping about my clothes behind my back?”
Denise flinched as if I had struck her across the face. The dark secrets of their financial dependency—secrets I had kept hidden out of misplaced loyalty to Tyler—hung heavily in the night air.
“You... you promised you wouldn't bring that up,” Denise muttered, her voice dropping an octave.
“I didn't promise anything,” I said.
From down the driveway, the sharp sweep of headlights cut through the darkness. Two sleek black SUVs—the luxury rentals I had booked for the weekend—pulled up side-by-side, their engines idling with a low, expensive purr.
The driver’s side door of the lead vehicle opened, and a tall man in a dark suit stepped out, holding a digital tablet. It was Marcus, the regional concierge manager for the exclusive Lakeview Property Group, whom I had personally contacted via the VIP support line three minutes ago.
Marcus strode briskly across the gravel driveway, stepping onto the patio with an expression of strict, professional authority.
“Good evening, Mrs. Vance,” Marcus said, nodding respectfully in my direction before turning his cold, practiced glare toward the cluster of shocked relatives. He then looked at Tyler, who looked ready to melt into the lawn.
“Is there a problem, Marcus?” Tyler squeaked, attempting to puff out his chest and project authority he didn't possess. “I’m Tyler Vance. This is my family vacation. My wife made a mistake on the app, but we’re sorting it out. You can unlock the house now.”
Marcus didn't even look at Tyler. He kept his eyes fixed on his tablet.
“Mr. Tyler Vance,” Marcus read aloud, his voice crisp and clear. “According to our records, the lease agreement, the security deposit, and the primary payment source are registered exclusively under Olivia Vance. Furthermore, my system indicates that the reservation has been cancelled by the primary account holder, and all access privileges for secondary occupants have been legally revoked.”
Marcus tapped his screen.

Both SUVs flashed their hazard lights twice, and the smart-locks on their doors automatically engaged with a heavy thud.

“Furthermore,” Marcus continued, looking up at the group, “as of twenty seconds ago, the property management company has received notice of unauthorized occupation. You have thirty minutes to collect your personal belongings from the interior before local law enforcement arrives to escort you off the premises.”
