Chapter 9 - The Cleaner’s Revenge

Two weeks later, the social columns of the Chicago Tribune and several national financial outlets were ablaze with headlines that kept the city's elite buzzing for days.

The accompanying photo featured Alexander and Clara walking out of the federal courthouse after Marcus Thorne and Victoria Sterling’s arraignment. Clara wore a stunning, elegant white trench coat, her diamond ring catching the flashbulbs of a dozen cameras, her head held high and proud. Victoria, meanwhile, hid her face behind a designer handbag as federal marshals ushered her into a black SUV.

The corporate fallout was swift and absolute. Vanguard’s stock actually surged by four percent following the transparency report released by David Rossi, proving to the market that the company tolerated zero corruption, regardless of executive titles.

Back at the West Side community center where Clara had volunteered for years, things were much quieter.

On a crisp Saturday morning, Clara stood in her old gray janitorial jumpsuit, helping organize donated clothing in the community center basement.

The door opened, and heavy footsteps echoed down the concrete stairs.

Alexander walked in, wearing a casual black cashmere sweater and jeans, carrying two cups of hot coffee from the local diner. He looked completely out of place in the dingy basement—and yet, he looked entirely at home standing beside her.

"You know, for a billionaire CEO, you're getting entirely too comfortable hanging around basements," Clara teased, taking the coffee cup from his hand.

"I go wherever my fiancée goes," Alexander replied smoothly, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and pressing a kiss to her temple. "Besides, the board meeting is adjourned until Monday. I figured I'd help out the community's hardest-working logistics expert."

Clara smiled, leaning against him, looking around the modest room where her journey had started. She had conquered the boardroom, exposed the rats, and won the heart of the most powerful man in the city. But standing here with him now, holding a warm cup of coffee in her old clothes, she knew that her true foundation wasn't built on corporate glass or billion-dollar mergers.
