Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

By evening, the corporate storm had passed, leaving behind a completely restructured executive landscape.
Clara stood in Alexander’s sprawling thirty-thirtieth-floor penthouse office, looking out at the glittering lights of the Chicago skyline through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The rain had stopped, leaving the glass slick with glittering droplets that reflected the city lights below.
The heavy oak door opened, and Alexander walked in, loosening his silk tie as he tossed his suit jacket over the back of the leather sofa. He walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder.
"You handled the boardroom like an apex predator," Alexander murmured, pressing a soft kiss against her neck.
"I learned from the best," Clara smiled, leaning back against his chest. "Though you had to admit, dropping the 'fiancée' bomb right in front of your mother's favorite social-climbing executive was a masterclass in dramatic timing."
Alexander chuckled, a deep, resonant sound that vibrated against her spine. "I’ve been waiting six months to tell those vultures that you're mine. Victoria just gave me the best excuse I could have asked for."
Clara turned around within his embrace, wrapping her arms around his neck, looking up into his striking slate-grey eyes. "Your mother is going to have a fit when she hears about this. She still thinks I moonlight as a maid."
"Let her," Alexander said softly, his expression turning entirely serious as he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, black velvet ring box.
Clara’s breath hitched.
Alexander dropped to one knee right there on the polished hardwood floor of his penthouse office, looking up at her with a raw, vulnerable devotion that the corporate world never got to see.
"You didn't need my billions, and you didn't need my name to prove your worth," Alexander said, his voice thick with emotion. "You walked into my life wearing a gray uniform, and you completely dismantled every cold, calculated rule I lived by. Clara Vance... will you marry me for real? No secrets. No hiding behind cleaning carts."
Tears welled up in Clara’s green eyes, a bright, genuine smile breaking across her face.

"Yes," she whispered, leaning down as he slid the stunning diamond ring onto her finger. "Yes, Alexander. I'll marry you."
