The CEO's Midnight Secret / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Uniform and the Boardroom

The glass doors of Vanguard Global’s corporate headquarters slid open with a soft, pneumatic hiss, welcoming the morning rush of high-priced consultants, ruthless litigators, and executive VPs. Among them, pushing a heavy stainless-steel janitorial cart filled with bleach, microfiber cloths, and commercial glass cleaner, was Clara Vance.

Clara wore her standard gray uniform—baggy, shapeless, and intentionally designed to make her invisible. Her dark hair was pulled back into a tight, practical bun, and a surgical mask covered the lower half of her face. To the suits rushing past her toward the elevators, she was just part of the morning infrastructure, no different than the potted ficus trees or the security scanners.

They had no idea that last night, in the sprawling, glass-walled penthouse overlooking the Chicago river, Clara had slept in the arms of Alexander Vance—the billionaire CEO who owned the entire thirty-floor skyscraper.

"Watch the floors, cleaner," snapped a sharp, nasal voice behind her.

Clara stepped aside smoothly, lowering her gaze. It was Victoria Sterling, senior VP of marketing and the woman Alexander’s mother had spent the last two years trying to groom as a daughter-in-law. Victoria stepped over the damp tile with an expression of aristocratic disgust, her designer heels clicking sharply against the freshly mopped marble.

"Some people have no spatial awareness," Victoria muttered to her assistant as they stepped into the private executive elevator.

Clara didn't blink. She just kept pushing her cart toward the east corridor, a faint, secret smile playing at the corners of her lips. If Victoria knew that Alexander spent his weekends cooking breakfast for Clara in her tiny, two-bedroom apartment in South Side, or that her signature was the only one on his personal medical power of attorney, the corporate shark would likely have a stroke right there on the polished marble.

For six months, their relationship had been a tightly guarded secret. Alexander wanted to protect her from the carnivorous media sharks and his mother’s vicious social circle until he restructured the board. But secrets in a multi-billion-dollar corporation never stay buried for long.
