The CEO's Midnight Secret / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2 - The Executive Review

By 10:00 AM, Clara had transitioned from her uniform into a crisp, charcoal-gray tailored pantsuit, trading her cleaning cart for a leather briefcase. As the newly appointed lead logistics consultant for Vanguard’s upcoming supply chain overhaul—a position she had earned through her master’s degree in industrial engineering rather than her relationship with the CEO—she walked into Conference Room 4B.

The room was already packed with senior executives. At the head of the long mahogany table sat Alexander.

He looked devastatingly sharp in a bespoke navy suit, his silver-threaded dark hair perfectly styled, his cold, slate-grey eyes scanning the architectural blueprints spread out before him. When Clara entered, his eyes flickered toward her for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression of warmth that vanished instantly behind his mask of corporate indifference.

"Sit, Ms. Vance," Alexander commanded, his voice deep and authoritative, commanding the entire room's absolute attention.

Clara took a seat near the middle of the table, opening her tablet.

Across from her sat Marcus Thorne, the head of procurement and one of Alexander’s most vocal internal rivals. Marcus had been trying to push through a bloated logistics contract with a shell company he secretly owned, and Clara’s recent audit had completely dismantled his proposal.

"I’ve reviewed Ms. Vance’s preliminary logistics projections," Marcus began, his voice dripping with condescension as he tossed a printed report onto the table. "Frankly, it reads like amateur hour. She's proposing we cut our regional warehouse storage by forty percent. That kind of disruption will cripple our quarterly distribution."

The room went quiet. Several executives exchanged nervous glances, waiting to see how the CEO would handle the direct challenge to his hand-picked consultant.

Alexander didn't flinch. He leaned back in his leather chair, steepling his fingers beneath his chin, his slate-grey eyes locking onto Marcus with chilling intensity.

"Amateur hour, Mr. Thorne?" Alexander repeated softly, the quiet danger in his tone making the air in the room drop ten degrees. "Ms. Vance’s projections are based on three months of granular data analysis, freight optimization algorithms, and operational site visits that you apparently didn't care to review. Before you call her numbers amateur, perhaps you should check whether your own preferred vendors are actually shipping goods or just billing us for phantom inventory."

Marcus’s face drained of color. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out.

Clara kept her expression entirely neutral, though a warm surge of affection bloomed in her chest. Alexander had always been fiercely protective of her, both in the boardroom and behind closed doors. But today, the tension in the room felt different. It felt heavier. As if someone had quietly loaded a weapon under the table and was just waiting for an excuse to pull the trigger.
