Chapter 4 - The Midnight Audit

The digital forensics lab on the twentieth floor was bathed in the cool, blue glow of multiple server racks.

It was 11:30 PM. The rest of the skyscraper was dead silent, save for the hum of the HVAC system and the clicking of keys as David Rossi, Vanguard’s chief cybersecurity officer, decrypted an encrypted file trail linked to Marcus Thorne’s workstation.

Clara stood beside the main console, holding a cup of black coffee, watching the lines of code scroll down the monitor. Alexander stood behind her, his hands resting lightly on the back of her chair, his gaze fixed on the screen.

"There it is," David murmured, pointing at a highlighted folder. "Someone downloaded our unreleased Q4 logistics strategy at 2:15 PM today and routed it directly to an external IP address registered under a shell company in the Cayman Islands."

"And the IP address belongs to?" Alexander demanded, his voice dangerously low.

"Sterling Marketing Group," David replied without hesitation. "Victoria Sterling didn't just stumble across your consulting notes, Clara. She and Marcus Thorne have been colluding to short-sell Vanguard stock ahead of the upcoming supply chain restructuring announcement."

The pieces clicked together with terrifying clarity. It wasn't just office politics or petty jealousy. It was insider trading and corporate sabotage on a massive scale.

"They're planning to crash the stock during next week's board meeting by claiming our logistics overhaul is a complete failure," Clara realized, her analytical mind piecing the conspiracy together. "Then Marcus’s shell company buys up the devalued shares at a discount."

Alexander straightened up, his slate-grey eyes flashing with cold, calculated fury. He had spent ten years building Vanguard Global into an unassailable financial titan. No one—not a disgruntled VP of procurement, not a social-climbing marketing director—was going to tear it down from the inside.

"David, lock down that server trail," Alexander ordered, his tone absolute. "Do not notify legal yet. I want every single transaction documented and timestamped. We're going to trap them on the open floor during the quarterly review next Tuesday."

"And what about Victoria?" Clara asked, looking up at him.

Alexander’s expression softened slightly as he looked down into her green eyes. He reached out, gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

"Let her play her game, sweetheart," Alexander murmured, his voice dropping into a warm, intimate register. "By Tuesday afternoon, she won't even have a security badge to get past the lobby."
