Later that afternoon, I sat at my new oak desk in the study—the room where Joe used to hide his burner phones and financial ledgers.
The dark, intimidating bookshelves had been replaced with bright, modern shelving stocked with legal files, corporate leadership textbooks, and architectural designs for a new nonprofit foundation I was launching to support single mothers and chronically ill children.
My phone chimed on the desk. It wasn't a threat, a lawyer, or a toxic family member.
It was an official notification from the state business registry confirming the complete dissolution of Vance Global and the successful transfer of its remaining restructured assets into the Clara & Tommy Foundation for Childhood Innovation.
I leaned back in my leather chair, looking out through the sparkling bay windows toward the sprawling green lawn where Tommy was playing.
