Chapter 2 - The House of Cards Collapses

The chaos inside the Greenwich country club ballroom escalated from stunned silence to absolute bedlam within seconds.
Phones began to buzz in pockets across the room. Several corporate executives pulled out their smartphones, their faces draining of color as email notifications flooded their screens—official automated alerts from federal regulatory bodies and the SEC flagging suspicious wire transfers, offshore shell companies, and fraudulent corporate restructuring documents originating from Vance Global.
“Security!” Eleanor shrieked, her voice cracking as she pointed a trembling, jeweled finger at Tommy and me. “Get them out of here! They’re ruining my birthday! This is slander! Lies!”
None of the security guards moved. They stood frozen near the double doors, watching the high-society elite scramble like rats on a sinking ship. They knew as well as everyone else that when federal regulators get involved, public payroll guards don't stick their necks out for a disgraced CEO.
Joe pushed past Tracy, his face purple with rage. He lunged toward the stage again, but before he could reach the steps, the heavy oak doors of the ballroom swung open with a resounding bang.
Four men in dark suits and windbreakers bearing federal insignia stepped into the room.
“Joseph Vance?” the lead agent called out, his voice calm, authoritative, and carrying across the entire hall.
The room parted like the Red Sea. Joe froze mid-stride, his arms hovering uselessly in the air.
“I’m Special Agent Miller, IRS Criminal Investigation Division,” the agent announced, flashing a gold badge. “Mr. Vance, you are under federal arrest for wire fraud, tax evasion, and systemic embezzlement of corporate pension funds totaling over fourteen million dollars.”
Gasps echoed through the crowd. Eleanor let out a sharp, choked cry and collapsed backward into the arms of a terrified catering manager, clutching her chest.
Tracy grabbed her red dress by the hem, turned on her stiletto heels, and bolted for the side exit, completely abandoning Joe and the three-year-old boy who stood bewildered near the edge of the dance floor. Little Leo started crying, his small wails piercing the tense air.
I looked down at the child—innocent, used as a pawn in Joe’s grand social scheme—and felt a pang of pity. But I didn't move to help him. That was Tracy and Joe’s burden now.
Agent Miller walked past the paralyzed crowd, stopping at the foot of the stage. He looked up at Tommy, who was still holding the black USB drive, and then at me.
“Mrs. Vance?” the agent asked politely.
“Present,” I replied steadily.

“We received the digital evidentiary package transmitted from this device ten minutes ago. Outstanding forensic preservation work, young man,” Agent Miller nodded approvingly at Tommy. “Your attorney has already filed the emergency asset-freezing motions with Judge Miller downtown. Every account, asset, and holding tied to Joseph Vance is officially under federal receivership.”
