Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Summer arrived in Greenwich with brilliant sunshine and warm, fragrant breezes rolling off Long Island Sound.
The estate on Willow Creek Lane had undergone a quiet transformation. The formal, rigid gardens had been redesigned into vibrant, natural wildflower meadows where Tommy could build his outdoor science projects without worrying about formal etiquette or pleasing unpleasable grandparents.
Eleanor had been quietly placed in a modest assisted living facility outside the city, her high-society friends having completely vanished the moment her accounts were frozen. None of them had come to visit her. The cruel irony of a woman who valued social status above family dying friendless in a sterile room was heavy, but it was a path of her own making.
On a bright Saturday morning, Tommy and I were out on the back patio testing a remote-controlled drone he had engineered from scratch.
The small quadcopter whirred into the blue sky, performing a flawless loop before landing gently on the grass right at my feet.
“Did you see that, Mom?!” Tommy cheered, running across the lawn with his face flushed and glowing with healthy energy. “The gyroscope stabilization worked perfectly!”
“I saw, buddy!” I laughed, picking up the drone and handing it back to him. “You’re getting closer to building a real aerospace company every day.”
“When I grow up, I’m going to build software that protects people from bad guys like Dad,” Tommy said seriously, his dark eyes shining with determination.

My heart swelled with a fierce, unbreakable pride.
