Chapter 6 - Returning to the Estate

Two weeks later, the media vans outside our Greenwich estate had finally dispersed, replaced by the quiet, peaceful rustle of autumn leaves falling across the manicured lawns.
We returned home on a crisp Tuesday afternoon. The heavy iron gates swung open automatically as our car approached. The sprawling brick-and-stone mansion looked as majestic as ever, but as we stepped out onto the cobblestone driveway, the heavy, suffocating aura of fear and walking on eggshells was entirely gone.
Inside, residential cleaning teams hired by Victoria’s office had completely sanitized the interior. Every trace of Joe’s personal belongings—his tailored suits, his golf trophies, his arrogant presence—had been boxed up and hauled off to a storage locker pending liquidation.
Tommy ran straight up the grand staircase toward his bedroom, eager to set up his new electronics lab in the spacious sunlit loft overlooking the garden.
I walked slowly through the grand foyer, trailing my fingers along the mahogany banister. I remembered standing right here the night of the party, listening to Eleanor’s cold remarks, watching Joe parade his mistress in front of our family. They had believed I was completely trapped—a penniless, dependent housewife who would cry, beg, and accept humiliation for the sake of keeping up appearances.
They had never imagined that silence could mean preparation.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was an email from the chief executive of a prominent Silicon Valley cybersecurity firm, requesting an informal advisory consultation based on an anonymous white-paper on automated cloud-sync forensics that had been circulating among tech circles online—a paper Tommy had written under a pseudonym and published last month.

I smiled, looking up toward the second-floor loft where the faint sound of electronic music and youthful laughter echoed down the hallway.
