Chapter 3 - The Departure

The flashing red and blue lights of federal cruisers painted the pristine white pillars of the Greenwich country club in harsh, surreal strokes.

By the time Tommy and I walked out the front glass doors, the media circus had already arrived. Local news vans, paparazzi, and digital journalists swarmed the stone courtyard like hornets, their camera flashes blinding against the evening sky.

“Mrs. Vance! Mrs. Vance! Is it true your husband embezzled millions?”

“Did you know about the secret family?”

“Mr. Vance, any comment on the federal raid?!”

I kept one hand firmly on Tommy’s shoulder, guiding him through the crush of reporters toward the sleek black town car waiting at the curb—a car my divorce attorney had arranged for us hours earlier.

Through the crowd, I caught one final glimpse of Joe. He was handcuffed behind his back, flanked by two federal marshals, shoved roughly into the back of an unmarked SUV. His expensive suit was wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and his eyes locked onto mine for one brief, agonizing second. It was the look of a man who had gambled everything on his own arrogance and lost absolute control.

As the car door slammed shut behind us, sealing out the noise, the flashing lights, and the crumbling wreckage of my ten-year marriage, a profound, breathless silence filled the cabin.

Tommy slumped back against the leather seat, letting out a long, shuddering breath. The brave, defiant facade he had worn on stage melted away, replaced by the tired, vulnerable ten-year-old boy he truly was.

I pulled him close, wrapping my arms around his shoulders and kissing the top of his dark curls.

“You okay, buddy?” I asked softly.

Tommy nodded, wiping a stray tear from his cheek with the back of his sleeve. “I was scared, Mom. When Dad yelled... I thought he was going to take the drive away.”

“You were the bravest person in that room, Tommy,” I whispered fiercely, my voice thick with emotion. “You saved us. Never forget that.”

The driver pulled out smoothly from the curb, bypassing the country club and heading north toward the city. Behind us, the Vance family empire burned to the ground, and for the first time in a decade, I felt completely, exhilaratingly free.
