Chapter 4 - The Safehouse and the Strategy

The safehouse was a secluded, modern architectural home tucked away in the wooded hills north of Westchester County—secure, peaceful, and completely invisible from public registries.

Within an hour of our arrival, our lead divorce and family law attorney, Eleanor’s worst nightmare and the top-rated litigator in the tri-state area, Victoria Vance (no relation to Joe, thankfully), arrived with a briefcase full of preliminary court orders.

We sat around a polished walnut dining table while Tommy slept peacefully in the guest room upstairs, exhausted from his ordeal.

“The timing couldn't have been more absolute,” Victoria said, sliding a stack of stamped court documents across the table toward me. “Because of the federal indictments and Ethan’s—excuse me, Joe’s brother Ethan’s—cooperating testimony regarding the offshore accounts, Judge Miller has granted you an immediate, ex parte emergency order.”

I picked up the top paper, scanning the bold legal headings.

“Sole legal and physical custody of Tommy,” I read aloud, my heart swelling.

“Uncontested and permanent, given the father’s federal incarceration and the documented abandonment,” Victoria added. “Furthermore, because the Greenwich estate was purchased using your pre-marital family inheritance trust—a fact Joe conveniently tried to obscure in corporate filings—the court has restored full, unencumbered ownership of the property to your name alone.”

I let out a slow, steady breath. The sprawling mansion where I had endured ten years of condescension, cold remarks from Eleanor, and emotional isolation was mine. Not Joe’s. Not the Vance family’s. Mine.

“What about Eleanor?” I asked.

Victoria smiled thinly. “Eleanor is currently liquidating her private jewelry collection to pay her legal fees. The federal investigators are examining her personal accounts as well, since several embezzled corporate checks were funneled through her charitable foundation. She’s entirely isolated. Her high-society friends have already deleted her numbers.”

It was a cold, poetic justice. Eleanor had spent her entire life worshiping status, wealth, and the illusion of patriarchal perfection. Now, she was facing the twilight of her years stripped of her fortune, her social standing, and the son she had spoiled into ruin.
