Chapter 9 - The Final Reckoning

The federal investigators didn't wait long. Armed with the new evidence provided by Arthur and the anonymous tipster, federal agents raided Diane’s luxury apartment in downtown Boston at dawn on a rainy Thursday morning.
By afternoon, the news broke nationwide: Former Philanthropist and Corporate Matriarch Diane Vance Arrested on Charges of Fraud, Embezzlement, and Cold-Case Homicide Investigation.
Mark and I watched the broadcast on the living room television while Lily was upstairs doing her homework. The footage showed Diane—no longer looking like the untouchable queen of Boston high society, but a frail, handcuffed woman in a gray jumpsuit—being led into a police van under a barrage of flashing camera lights.
She didn't look at the cameras. She didn't lift her head. Her eyes were fixed on the pavement, empty and defeated.
Mark clicked the TV off with the remote. The room fell into a heavy, profound silence.
“Do you feel any pity for her?” I asked quietly, resting my hand gently over his.
Mark looked down at my hand, turning his palm upward to interlace our fingers. He let out a long, slow breath. “I feel sad for the mother I thought I had, Clara. But I feel immense gratitude for the family I have right now.”

He stood up, walking over to the window to watch the rain tapping against the glass. The dark storm clouds of the Vance family legacy were finally breaking, letting the first rays of real sunlight pierce through.
