Chapter 6 - Shadows from the Past

The following week, Mark and I decided that a change of scenery was desperately needed. The city still hummed with whispers and tabloid headlines about the Vance family collapse, but out here in our quiet suburban neighborhood, the world felt safe and grounded.
On a crisp Tuesday afternoon, Mark and I sat on the back patio drinking coffee while Lily played happily on the wooden swing set we had installed in the garden, her laughter floating softly on the autumn breeze.
“My uncle Arthur called this morning,” Mark said, setting his mug down on the glass table. “The forensic audit on my mother’s private accounts is complete.”
I looked over at him, raising an eyebrow. “And?”
“It turns out my mother wasn't just hoarding wealth; she was systematically embezzling from the charitable foundation my father established before he died,” Mark said, shaking his head in disbelief. “She was using the funds to pay off personal debts and maintain her social standing among the elite. The federal prosecutor’s office is opening a full criminal investigation.”
A cold shiver ran down my spine. “Will she... will she go to prison?”
“If the charges stick, yes,” Mark said solemnly, looking toward the garden where Lily was now chasing a golden butterfly. “She could face up to ten years. For the first time in her life, her money and her name won't be able to buy her way out.”

It wasn't a moment of triumphant celebration; it was a sobering realization that karma doesn't rush, but it never misses its target. The woman who had tried to crush my daughter’s spirit over a piece of buffet food was now facing the ultimate reckoning of her own making.
