Chapter 8 - The Confrontation at the Facility

That evening, Mark and I sat across from Uncle Arthur in his wood-paneled downtown law office, placing the mysterious photograph and letter squarely on his desk.

Arthur adjusted his reading glasses, picking up the photo with trembling fingers. The moment his eyes landed on the man standing beside a young Diane, all the color drained completely from his face.

“Where... where did you get this?” Arthur whispered, his voice uncharacteristically breathless.

“It arrived in the mail today,” Mark said, leaning forward. “Uncle Arthur, who is that man? And what does the letter mean about the original fortune?”

Arthur closed his eyes for a long moment, rubbing his temples as if trying to bury ghosts he thought were dead and forgotten.

“His name was Julian Vance,” Arthur said quietly, opening his eyes to look at us. “My older brother—Mark’s actual father.”

Mark froze. “My father was Richard Vance. Everyone in Boston knows that.”

“Richard was our cousin,” Arthur corrected grimly. “When Julian died mysteriously in a yacht explosion thirty-five years ago, Diane inherited everything by producing a forged will just two weeks before Richard stepped in to manage the estate. We always suspected she orchestrated the accident, but we never had proof. Whoever sent this letter... they know the truth.”

“Which means,” I realized aloud, “Diane didn't just lose her wealth and her board seat—she’s sitting on a ticking time bomb of murder and fraud.”
