Chapter 2 - The Silent Ride Home

The drive back to our suburban estate was wrapped in a thick, suffocating blanket of silence. Outside the tinted windows of our SUV, the glittering neon lights of the city blurred into streaks of rain and shadow. Lily had fallen asleep in the backseat, her small hand still clutching a crushed piece of cloth from my dress.
In the driver’s seat, Mark stared straight ahead at the wet highway, his hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were stark white.
“I’m sorry, Clara,” he broke the silence just as we turned into our gated driveway. His voice sounded hollow, defeated by years of denial finally crashing down at once. “I spent ten years making excuses for her. Every time she criticized your background, every time she made those cold remarks about adopting Lily... I told myself she was just old-fashioned.”
I turned my head from the passenger seat, looking at the tired lines etched around his eyes. “She wasn't old-fashioned, Mark. She was cruel. And tonight, she crossed a line that can never be uncrossed.”
“She called the police from her cell phone while security was escorting her out,” Mark muttered, pulling the car to a smooth stop in front of the double garage doors. “Her lawyer left three voicemails already. She’s threatening to sue us for assault, demanding a public apology, and claiming we staged the whole thing to humiliate her in front of the board of trustees.”

I unbuckled my seatbelt, feeling a cold, fierce resolve settle into my bones. “Let her call her lawyers. Let her talk to the board. If she wants a war, we’ll give her a war she’ll never forget.”
