Chapter 9 - Healing the Castle

Six months later, our lives had settled into a rhythm of peace, stability, and unshakeable joy.

We had sold the old suburban house—too many dark shadows lingered in those hallways—and moved into a bright, modern architectural home overlooking the coastal hills. There were no hidden cameras, no smart locks controlled by strangers, and no fear echoing in the corners of the rooms.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, Noah and I were sitting on the sprawling green lawn in the backyard, building a massive fortress out of wooden blocks and colorful building bricks.

Noah, now five and a half, wore a bright blue superhero cape tied around his neck, laughing as he placed a tiny plastic dragon on top of the highest tower.

“Mommy, look! The dragon is guarding the castle so no bad guys can ever get in!” Noah announced proudly, his dark eyes sparkling with happiness.

I smiled, reaching over to ruffle his dark curls. “That’s right, buddy. And this castle has the strongest walls in the whole world.”

Marcus walked out from the back patio carrying a tray with lemonade and fresh cookies, watching us with a warm, content smile. He had become a steady, reliable presence in our lives—not just as legal counsel, but as a true friend who had stood beside us through the darkest storm of our existence.

“Looks like an impregnable fortress, Captain,” Marcus said, setting the tray down on the picnic table and handing me a glass of lemonade.

“It is,” I agreed, taking a sip as I watched Noah run across the grass to chase a butterfly. “Nothing is getting through these walls ever again.”
