Chapter 1 - The Glow of the Screen

The ceramic tile of the kitchen floor was freezing against my knees, but I couldn't feel it. All I could feel was the frantic, thumping rhythm of my four-year-old son Noah’s heart beating against my chest as I held him tight. His small body was still trembling, damp with nervous sweat and tears, his little arms locked around my neck as if letting go meant disappearing.
Across the room, Diane was clutching her shoulder where she had slammed into the oak cabinets, her face twisted in a mask of outraged venom. Ryan was leaning against the stainless-steel refrigerator, rubbing his reddened cheek where my hand had struck him, his expression a mix of cowardice and sullen defense.
"Have you completely lost your mind, Emily?!" Diane shrieked, her voice grating against the quiet suburban evening. "We were teaching the boy discipline! He refused to eat his lunch, so we introduced consequence training! You've ruined everything!"
I didn't answer her. My breathing was shallow, my ears ringing with a sharp, high-pitched whine. I slowly set Noah down on the kitchen mat, keeping my body between him and his grandmother, and turned my head toward the granite island.
The screen of Ryan’s discarded smartphone was still illuminated. A red recording dot blinked rhythmically in the corner.
Slowly, fighting the violent shaking in my hands, I reached out and tapped the screen to replay the video from the beginning.
The high-definition camera angle captured the entire room. It showed Noah crying, shivering beside the dog bowl. It showed Diane laughing, pulling his hair downward with deliberate cruelty. And then, it panned smoothly to the left, capturing Ryan leaning against the counter, smiling broadly as he adjusted the camera angle to get a better shot, whispering to his mother: “Make sure you get his face good and close. This is going to look brilliant in the custody petition.”

The color drained instantly from Diane’s face, leaving her looking like a corpse under the harsh overhead lights. Ryan opened his mouth, but no sound came out. The smug defiance vanished from his eyes, replaced by sudden, naked terror.
