Chapter 8 - The Price of Greed

The legal fallout for the Sterling-Holloway family was swift and catastrophic.
Arthur Vance, realizing his firm’s complicity in drafting the fraudulent custody agreements had been exposed through digital audit trails, cut a deal with federal prosecutors to turn over every email, memo, and recorded conversation he had shared with Diane and Ryan.
Diane was apprehended by federal marshals at a highway motel in Nevada three weeks after fleeing the state, sitting in a dingy room with three suitcases filled with her antique silver and maxed-out credit cards. She was extradited back to California without bond, facing up to twelve years in federal prison for child endangerment, conspiracy, and financial wire fraud.
Ryan, facing overwhelming evidence and abandoned by his high-priced defense team, pleaded guilty to lesser charges of reckless endangerment and fraud in exchange for a mandatory minimum sentence of six years without parole.
On a crisp autumn morning, I stood on the courthouse steps after the final sentencing hearing, surrounded by flashing cameras from local news outlets and legal reporters.
“Mrs. Hayes! Do you have a statement regarding the sentencing of your ex-husband?” a reporter shouted, thrusting a microphone toward my face.
I paused, adjusting my dark sunglasses, looking straight into the camera lens with a calm, unyielding gaze.
“Justice has been served,” I said clearly into the microphone. “No amount of wealth, status, or sophisticated legal scheming can ever protect someone who tries to break a child. To every parent fighting behind closed doors: keep your eyes open, trust your instincts, and never let anyone make you believe your love isn't enough to shield your family.”

I turned away from the cameras, stepping down into the warm sunlight where Marcus was waiting by the car.
