Chapter 6 - The Hammer Falls

Judge Sterling didn't look away from the screen for a single second. Her face grew darker and harder with every frame until her expression resembled a thunderstorm about to break.

When the video finally looped to a stop, the judge slowly turned her gaze from the projection screen down toward Arthur Vance and his client.

“Mr. Vance,” Judge Sterling’s voice dropped into a register so cold it sent a shiver through the entire room. “Is this the ‘environmental instability’ your petition was referring to?”

Arthur Vance stammered, frantically shuffling his papers. “Your Honor... we... my client claims he was coerced by his mother... he was merely documenting an isolated disciplinary incident—!”

“Documenting felony child abuse and unlawful imprisonment of a four-year-old child is not a disciplinary incident, Counselor. It is a criminal conspiracy,” Judge Sterling snapped, slamming her gavel down with a sharp crack that rattled the microphones.

She turned her sharp eyes directly onto Ryan, who was now trembling visibly in his seat.

“Mr. Hayes,” the judge said, her tone dripping with absolute contempt. “Effective immediately, your emergency custody petition is denied with prejudice. Furthermore, I am issuing a permanent restraining order barring you and your mother from coming within five hundred yards of Noah Hayes or petitioner Emily Hayes.”

Ryan opened his mouth, trying to speak, but the judge cut him off before a single sound escaped his lips.

“Bailiff,” Judge Sterling ordered crisply. “Take Mr. Hayes into custody on suspicion of child endangerment, conspiracy, and unlawful restraint. Notify the district attorney’s office that I am transferring all digital evidence directly to the grand jury for immediate indictment.”

Two uniformed bailiffs stepped forward instantly, grabbing Ryan by the shoulders and hauling him out of his chair as he began to sob hysterically, begging me across the courtroom to help him.

I didn't blink. I didn't flinch. I simply watched him being dragged out the double doors of the courtroom, realizing with profound clarity that the man I had married was a stranger who had tried to destroy my son for money.
