Chapter 5 - The Legal Counter-Strike

By Monday morning, the storm had broken across the local legal landscape.

I sat across the polished mahogany conference table in the municipal courthouse, flanked by Marcus and two junior attorneys from our corporate legal team. Across the aisle sat Ryan, looking disheveled in a wrinkled suit, flanked by a high-priced divorce attorney named Arthur Vance—a silver-haired shark known for bullying opposing counsel into submission.

Judge Katherine Sterling—a stern, no-nonsense magistrate with twenty years on the family court bench—sat on the elevated dais, reviewing the thick manila files resting before her.

“Counsel,” Judge Sterling began, her voice echoing through the quiet courtroom. “We are here for an emergency ex-parte custody hearing filed by Mr. Ryan Hayes regarding temporary parental allocation and residence rights for the minor child, Noah Hayes.”

Arthur Vance stood up, adjusting his tie with a confident, oily smile. “Thank you, Your Honor. My client seeks immediate sole custody of his son due to environmental instability and acute negligence on the part of Mrs. Hayes, who has prioritized her corporate career over her maternal obligations, leaving the child in the care of unstable third-party supervisors while she travels for work.”

It was a masterclass in projection. Every accusation they were throwing at me was an exact blueprint of what they had planned to do to Noah.

I kept my hands folded neatly on the table, my expression like carved stone.

“Mrs. Hayes,” Judge Sterling turned her gaze toward me, her eyes sharp and assessing. “You have forty-eight hours to submit a formal defense against these allegations. What say you?”

I stood up, buttoned my blazer, and nodded to Marcus.

Marcus plugged a secure flash drive into the courtroom’s digital evidence display. Instantly, the massive projector screen behind the judge lit up.

“Your Honor,” Marcus said clearly, stepping forward. “We oppose the motion for custody allocation. Furthermore, we move for an immediate dismissal of the petitioner's claims, accompanied by a motion for emergency protective orders based on documented felony child abuse.”

Arthur Vance scoffed loudly, standing up. “Objection, Your Honor! This is an outrageous diversionary tactic! They have no evidence—!”

“Play the file, Marcus,” I instructed quietly.

The courtroom speakers crackled to life.

The high-definition audio of Diane’s voice rang out crystal clear: “Princesses don’t come from broken homes... make sure you get his face close, Ryan, this is going to look brilliant in the custody petition.”

Then, the video played.

The entire courtroom went dead silent. You could have heard a pin drop on the carpet. On the giant screen, four-year-old Noah sat weeping beside the dog bowl, wrapped in a silver chain attached to the laundry pipe, while his grandmother forced his face downward and his father smiled behind the lens.

Arthur Vance stopped mid-sentence, his jaw dropping open as he stared at the screen in utter horror.

Ryan slumped back in his chair, burying his face in his shaking hands.
