Chapter 4 - The Digital Fortress
The quiet hum of the home office upstairs was my sanctuary. I sat in my ergonomic leather chair with Noah curled up in a makeshift nest of blankets on the sofa behind me, watching cartoons on my tablet with a bowl of warm oatmeal.
Downstairs, the heavy thuds of Diane and Ryan dragging their suitcases across the hardwood floor echoed through the vents, followed by the slamming of the front door and the screech of tires as their luxury sedan sped down the driveway.
They were gone. But the war had only just begun.
The door to the office pushed open softly, and Marcus Vance stepped inside, holding a black aluminum attaché case. Marcus was my company’s chief legal counsel and a former federal cyber-crimes investigator. He wore a crisp charcoal suit, his expression grave and focused.
“The security sync is complete,” Marcus said, pulling up a chair beside my desk and opening his laptop. “We’ve mirrored Ryan’s cloud storage, backed up the kitchen security footage, and secured the original video file from his phone before he tried to remotely wipe it.”
“Did he try to wipe it?” I asked, narrowing my eyes.
“From his car hotspot while driving down the block,” Marcus smirked, tapping a key on his keyboard. “Standard amateur move. But our network architecture intercepted the command, quarantined the local cache, and pulled a complete metadata log of every device that has accessed that video file over the last seventy-two hours.”
Marcus spun the laptop around so the screen faced me.
I leaned forward, studying the data trees. The video wasn’t just a random act of cruelty by a frustrated grandmother. The metadata showed it had been shared via an encrypted messaging app to an external recipient four days ago.
The recipient’s username: Vance & Sterling Family Law — Associate Counsel.
My breath hitched. “They didn't just brainstorm this. They hired a family law firm to help orchestrate the custody trap.”

“Precisely,” Marcus said, adjusting his glasses. “And not just any firm. Sterling & Associates is notorious for handling high-net-worth divorces using aggressive, borderline criminal tactics. If we file first with the criminal evidence of child abuse, their civil custody petition blows up before it even reaches a judge's desk.”
