Chapter 8 - The Resurrection of the Dead

The photograph on the monitor showed a younger version of Evelyn Bennett standing beside a high-ranking military official in front of a classified command center in West Germany.

According to the official Department of Defense records displayed in the sidebar, Major General Evelyn Vance—legally recorded as killed in action during a classified intelligence extraction in 1996—was very much alive.

"Mom... she isn't just a retired Army mother-in-law," Julian said, running a hand through his dark hair. "She’s a disgraced military intelligence officer who faked her own death three decades ago after being implicated in a classified arms smuggling ring. She assumed a false identity, married into the Bennett family, and spent the last twenty years building a shadow network of fraudulent veteran charities to fund her private paramilitary projects."

Marcus stared at the screen in stunned disbelief. "And Ryan?"

"Ryan is her biological grandson, not her son," Julian corrected coldly. "He was placed in Lisa’s life through a meticulously orchestrated matchmaking algorithm designed to secure a civilian tech asset with federal clearance. They needed Lisa's cybersecurity firm to backdoor into the Department of Defense logistics network."

Lisa felt the floor drop out from beneath her feet. Every memory of her marriage—every sweet word, every shared holiday, every quiet evening—was nothing more than a meticulously crafted psychological operation designed to exploit her brilliance.

She wasn't a wife. She had been a target.

"Where are they holding the master server keys?" Lisa asked, her voice dropping into a tone so cold and steady that even Julian blinked in surprise.

Julian tapped a key on his keyboard, bringing up a live satellite feed of a secure rural warehouse located thirty miles outside San Bernardino.

"That’s their secondary staging ground," Julian said. "An abandoned military bunker leased under a shell corporation. That's where they store the physical paper ledgers, the offshore cryptographic hard drives, and the illicit cash reserves."

Captain Hayes placed a hand on his tactical holster. "Then we move. We coordinate with the federal marshals and raid the bunker before they realize the primary network has been locked down."

May you like

"No," Lisa said, stepping in front of the monitor, her eyes burning with an intense, unyielding fire. "You don't raid them. You let them think they still have access long enough for me to walk through that front door myself."
