Chapter 2 - The Audit Trail
The digital clock on Lisa’s monitor glowed 2:15 AM.
Downstairs, the house was completely silent. Ryan and Evelyn had retired to the guest suite, undoubtedly believing they had successfully re-established domestic dominance. They had no idea that the silent weapon Lisa had just unleashed was already tearing through their carefully constructed financial fortress.
Marcus Vance didn't wait for morning. Within twenty minutes of receiving Lisa's encrypted transmission, his secure terminal began auto-parsing the routing numbers attached to Evelyn’s Veterans Unity Fund.
What appeared on his screen made even a seasoned investigator of twenty-five years lean back in his chair with a low whistle.
The six thousand dollars Lisa paid every month wasn't going to disabled veterans. It was being funneled through a shell corporation called Apex Logistics & Security Solutions—a private contractor firm registered in Delaware, but controlled by a single primary beneficiary: Ryan Bennett.
Worse still, Marcus tracked the secondary accounts linked to Apex. The fund was receiving massive monthly capital injections originating from federal military disability trust funds assigned to soldiers who had been declared killed-in-action during overseas deployments between 2014 and 2019.
Someone inside the Department of Defense personnel database was keeping deceased soldiers "alive" on paper, siphoning their posthumous benefits into Evelyn’s charity front, and laundering the cash through private real estate acquisitions in Southern California.
Marcus picked up his secure satellite phone and dialed a direct line to the Pentagon's Criminal Investigation Division.
"This is Vance. I need an immediate asset freeze and tactical deployment order for a residential property in San Bernardino County," Marcus said, his voice dropping into hard, gravelly professional authority. "We have an active military embezzlement and identity fraud ring operating under a bogus charity front. The primary suspect is Major Ryan Bennett. And check the beneficiary records for a missing witness named Julian Vance—file number redacted back in 2018."
On the other end of the line, the duty officer paused. "Julian Vance? That name was flagged under a classified witness protection directive years ago. How is he connected to this?"

"That's what we're about to find out," Marcus replied, staring at a digital family tree diagram auto-generating on his secondary monitor. "According to the corporate registry metadata, Julian Vance isn't just a missing witness. He’s Lisa Bennett’s biological brother—the brother she was told died in a training accident seven years ago."
