Operation Ghost Ledger / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Midnight Protocol

The sharp brass sting of the ceremonial baton still burned along Lisa Bennett’s left shoulder, but the pain in her body was nothing compared to the ice water flooding her veins.

On the staircase, Ryan’s thumbs continued to glide across his phone screen, a soft blue light illuminating his cold, familiar face. He didn't blink. He didn't drop his device. He simply stepped around her crumpled form on the hardwood floor as if she were a discarded piece of trash, walking toward the kitchen to pour himself a glass of bourbon while Evelyn stood over her, breathing heavily, her chest heaving with arrogant self-righteousness.

"Get up off the floor, Lisa. Don't be dramatic," Evelyn snapped, adjusting the lapel of her tailored cardigan. "A military family requires discipline. If you can't respect the chain of command, you shouldn't have married into an officer’s household."

Lisa didn't answer. She kept her face pressed against the cool grain of the entryway floor, her fingers curled tightly into the carpet fibers. But deep inside her mind, a switch had flipped with a final, metallic click.

Six months ago, when Lisa had first noticed minor discrepancies in their joint asset portfolios while auditing corporate balance sheets for her cybersecurity firm, she had dismissed them as rounding errors. When Ryan insisted they funnel six thousand dollars a month into Evelyn’s "disabled veteran outreach fund," she had trusted him because he wore the uniform of a major.

She had trusted him because she believed in vows.

Now, staring at the dust motes dancing in the dim hallway light, she realized she wasn't a wife. She had been an authorized funding source for an organized syndicate operating under the guise of patriotic philanthropy.

Slowly, silently, Lisa pushed herself up. She didn't scream. She didn't throw punches. With her posture rigid and her gaze locked straight ahead, she walked past Evelyn and Ryan without a single word, climbing the stairs to her home office and locking the heavy oak door behind her.

Inside the quiet darkness of the room, the glowing amber light of her triple-monitor workstation welcomed her.

Her fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard with the terrifying precision of a seasoned systems analyst. She bypassed her home router, routing her traffic through an encrypted, decentralized VPN node based out of Zurich. Within forty seconds, she had accessed her private cold storage drive.

She attached three items to an encrypted transmission package:

1. The raw audio file of Evelyn striking her with the baton while demanding the five-thousand-dollar gala deposit.

2. Six months of bank statements showing regular six-thousand-dollar wire transfers from her personal corporate account into Evelyn’s "Veterans Unity Fund."

3. A high-resolution photograph of a classified ledger page she had secretly scanned from Ryan’s locked home safe three weeks ago—a ledger containing names of deceased soldiers whose social security numbers were actively tied to active-duty payroll withdrawals.

The recipient was Marcus Vance—a retired Army criminal investigator turned federal cyber-crimes consultant whom Lisa had contracted for corporate security audits three years prior.

She hit Send.

The progress bar flashed green for Secure Transmission Complete.

Right as the light blinked out, her phone buzzed on the mahogany desk. It was an incoming text message from an unknown encrypted number.

*“Package received, Lisa. We see the routing numbers. You have no idea how deep this rabbit hole goes. Stay inside the house. Military police jurisdiction is already being mobilized. They’ll be at your front gate by 0500 hours.”*

May you like

Lisa locked her phone, walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, and stared out at the dark suburban street below. She pulled the heavy velvet curtains shut, knowing that by sunrise, the life she had built over the last five years would be completely incinerated.
