Chapter 7 - The Ghost Behind the Desk

The sight inside Lisa’s private office made all three of them freeze in their tracks.

Sitting behind Lisa’s mahogany executive desk wasn't a corporate intruder or an armed mercenary. It was a man in his early thirties wearing a dark tactical hoodie, his hands resting casually on the keyboard.

When he heard the doors open, he turned his head slowly, looking up with tired, familiar eyes that bore an unmistakable resemblance to Lisa's own reflection in the mirror.

"Took you long enough, sis," Julian Vance said with a faint, tired smile.

Lisa gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as tears finally broke free from her eyes. She rushed across the room and threw her arms around her brother’s neck, burying her face in his shoulder.

"You're alive," she choked out, her voice breaking. "They told me... they said you died in a training accident in Fort Bragg..."

"It was a cover story," Julian murmured, holding her tightly before looking up at Marcus and Captain Hayes. "Glad you made it, Marcus. I tripped a dead-man’s switch on my terminal ten minutes ago. If you hadn't arrived, the local servers would have automatically wiped the entire database clean."

Marcus holstered his weapon, stepping closer to the desk. "What did you find, Julian? How deep does Evelyn's syndicate go?" deeper than we thought," Julian replied, spinning his monitor around so they could all see the complex web of data nodes. "Evelyn wasn't just laundering money through deceased soldiers' accounts. She was using a master cryptographic key stolen from the Pentagon's personnel archives in 2018—the exact year I went underground."

"And who gave her the key?" Captain Hayes asked sharply.

Julian’s expression darkened. He pulled up a classified personnel file from the encrypted folder.

"A ghost," Julian said softly. "Someone who officially died in a car bombing in Frankfurt thirty years ago. Someone who has been pulling the strings of this entire military contractor syndicate from the shadows."

He clicked the mouse, and a high-resolution photograph popped up on the center of the screen.

Lisa stared at the image, and the breath caught in her throat.

The woman in the photograph looking back at her from the screen had been dead and buried for decades. But Lisa had seen that exact face standing in her kitchen just twenty minutes ago, watching her son with cold, calculating eyes.
