Chapter 5 - Dawn at the Gates
At 5:00 AM sharp, heavy thuds echoed against the front door of the Bennett residence.
Lisa stood up from her desk, straightened her blazer, and walked calmly down the stairs. The morning sun was just beginning to paint the horizon in pale shades of bruised purple and gold.
She unlocked the heavy deadbolt and pulled the door wide open.
Standing on the porch were two Military Police officers in crisp uniforms, accompanied by Marcus Vance. Behind them, the suburban street was lined with federal vehicles, their emergency lights flashing soundlessly in the misty dawn air.
"Mrs. Bennett?" Captain Hayes asked formally, stepping onto the porch.
"Yes, Captain," Lisa said, her voice steady and clear.
"We are executing a federal search and seizure warrant for this residence in connection with military embezzlement, identity fraud, and wire corruption," Captain Hayes declared, holding out the paperwork. "Where is Major Ryan Bennett?"
Before Lisa could answer, heavy footsteps pounded down the stairs behind her. Ryan appeared in the hallway, dressed in his dress uniform trousers and a plain white undershirt, his face flushed with arrogant fury.
"What the hell is the meaning of this?" Ryan barked, stepping toward the doorway. "I am a serving major in the United States Army! You cannot barge into my home without proper clearance from my commanding officer!"
Marcus Vance stepped past Lisa, holding up a federal arrest warrant signed by a district judge less than an hour ago.
"Your clearance was revoked at 0415 hours, Major," Marcus said coldly. "Along with your bank accounts, your pension accrual, and your freedom."
Evelyn appeared behind Ryan, her face twisted in absolute horror as she saw the federal insignia on the officers' tactical vests. "This is an outrage! My charity is protected under military outreach directives! You can't touch us—"
"Save it for the magistrate, Evelyn," Captain Hayes interrupted, gesturing to the MPs behind him. "Place Major Bennett and Evelyn Bennett under arrest."
As the heavy steel handcuffs clicked around Ryan’s wrists, he shot Lisa a look of pure, venomous hatred. "You ruined everything, you ungrateful bitch. You think you won? You don't even know what your precious family was hiding!"
