Chapter 8 - The Hostile Counter-Strike

The downtown offices of Vanguard Global Holdings were sleek, modern, and entirely devoid of human warmth. Gleaming chrome desks, silent traders staring at multi-monitor setups, and security guards stationed every ten feet gave the space the feeling of a high-security military bunker.
At the center of it all sat Victor Vance—Julian’s uncle and the hidden mastermind behind Vanguard Global.
Victor was a man who had built an empire on extortion, corporate espionage, and quiet intimidation. For years, he had operated in the shadows, using Julian and Margaret as his unwitting puppets to slowly dismantle the Solmere Empire from the inside out.
The heavy glass doors of his private office burst open.
His chief financial officer stumbled inside, clutching a tablet with trembling hands, his face as pale as a sheet.
“Sir... sir, we have an emergency,” the CFO stammered, gasping for air.
Victor didn't look up from his leather armchair, swirling a glass of single-malt scotch. “Calm down, Miller. Did the SEC audit get delayed again?”
“No, sir. It’s... it’s worse. Much worse.”
“Spill it.”
“Within the last twenty minutes, an anonymous entity acquired forty-one percent of our floating stock on the open market,” Miller choked out, his voice shaking. “Simultaneously, our primary credit lines at three major European banks were instantly frozen due to outstanding regulatory flags on our asset portfolio.”
Victor’s scotch glass stopped mid-air. He slowly raised his head, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. “Who authorized a freeze on our European credit? That’s impossible without federal authorization.”
“It wasn't the federal government, sir,” Miller whispered, his knees trembling. “It was... it was Solmere Holdings. Under the direct signature of the new majority stakeholder.”
Victor stood up so fast his leather chair crashed backward onto the polished floor. “Charlotte Vale? The girl is supposed to be broken! How does a twenty-four-year-old girl have the liquidity to execute a multi-billion-dollar hostile takeover of our entire portfolio?”
Before Miller could answer, the security monitors mounted on the office wall flickered.
The corporate logo of Vanguard Global vanished, replaced instantly by the golden crest of the Solmere Empire. A live video feed filled the screen, showing the front lobby of Vanguard’s headquarters.
Standing in the center of the room, flanked by four federal marshals and Arthur Pendelton, was Charlotte Vale.
