Chapter 3 - The Bow of the Titan

Arthur Pendelton did something that made several high-society matrons drop their champagne flutes.
The most powerful legal titan in the city bent his knees, lowered his elderly frame to the cold marble floor, and bowed his head directly toward Charlotte.
“Miss Vale,” Arthur said, his voice carrying clearly across the cavernous lobby. “We have secured the corporate archives from the downtown depository. The forensic audit is complete. Your grandfather’s true will has been unsealed.”
The lobby erupted into a wall of whispered shock.
*Vale?*
*Did he say Vale?*
*As in... the Solmere family?*
Jessica staggered backward, her white silk gown brushing against a massive white orchid arrangement as the color drained entirely from her face. Her eyes darted wildly from Arthur to Charlotte, her mind refusing to compute the reality unfolding before her eyes.
“No,” Jessica whispered, shaking her head so violently her diamond earrings whipped against her neck. “That’s... that’s impossible. She’s an impostor! The real Charlotte Vale died in a car crash in Switzerland three years ago! Everyone knows that!”
Charlotte slowly pushed herself up from the marble. She didn't accept Thomas’s outstretched hand; she rose on her own power, brushing the white stone dust from her knees. The bruise on her cheekbone and the blood on her lip only highlighted the raw, unyielding authority in her eyes.
She turned her gaze slowly toward Jessica, whose chest was heaving beneath her designer gown.
“My father’s funeral was three years ago, Jessica,” Charlotte said, her voice cutting through the silence like a razor blade. “And the car crash in Switzerland was a staged fabrication orchestrated by the board of directors to strip me of my inheritance while I was studying abroad.”
She stepped forward, closing the distance between them. Jessica instinctively took a step back, her back hitting the marble pillar.
“You thought that by dragging me across this floor, by humiliating me in front of your wealthy little friends, you could assert dominance over a building you only have access to because my family allowed your father to manage our PR accounts,” Charlotte continued, her tone dangerously calm.
Arthur Pendelton stood up beside Charlotte, snapping open a thick black leather folder stamped with the federal court seal.

“By order of the New York State Supreme Court and the federal oversight committee,” Arthur announced to the frozen room, “all executive privileges held by the interim management board are hereby revoked. Effective immediately, Miss Charlotte Vale assumes full operational control of the Solmere Empire.”
