Chapter 4 - The Betrayal of the Boardroom

The private executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor smelled of aged leather, expensive cigars, and sheer panic.

Long mahogany tables stretched across the room, surrounded by leather chairs where five men and two women sat sweating under the harsh glare of the recessed lighting. These were the executives who had spent the last three years running the Solmere Empire into the ground while siphoning millions into offshore shell companies in the Cayman Islands.

The heavy double doors swung open.

Charlotte walked in first, wearing a tailored charcoal blazer over her simple tank top—a deliberate, symbolic reminder of how she had entered her own hotel an hour earlier. Behind her walked Arthur Pendelton, two federal marshals, and Julian Vance.

Julian looked like he had just seen a ghost. His tailored suit was rumpled, his tie loosened around his collar, and his hands trembled as he gripped the edge of the conference table.

“Charlotte...” Julian breathed, his voice cracking. “CG... baby, let’s not do this publicly. We can talk about this. We’re engaged. We were going to—”

*Clack.*

Charlotte dropped a heavy manila folder directly onto the center of the mahogany table, right in front of Julian.

“Engaged?” Charlotte interrupted, her voice dripping with ice. “Julian, you proposed to me six months ago specifically because your father’s investment firm was facing bankruptcy and you needed legal access to the Solmere trust fund to bail out your failing tech startups.”

Julian swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward the federal marshals standing near the door. “That’s a lie. You have no proof—”

“Page four of the folder, Julian,” Arthur Pendelton said smoothly, adjusting his glasses. “That’s a signed wire transfer confirmation dated four days ago, moving twelve million dollars of hotel reserve capital into your personal account in Zurich. Accompanied by your mother’s explicit written instructions to forge Miss Vale’s signature on the asset forfeiture documents.”

The oldest board member, a man named Henderson whose family had served the Solmeres for generations, slammed his fist on the table.

“This is an outrage!” Henderson shouted, standing up. “You’re relying on hearsay and forged documents! We built this company while you were hiding out like a coward!”

Charlotte turned her gaze to Henderson, her eyes narrowing. “My grandfather built this company with his own hands, Henderson. You were just an accountant who learned how to steal from the ledger when his back was turned. And speaking of your ledger...”

Charlotte tapped her phone against the table, casting a holographic projection onto the smart-screen at the head of the room.

The screen instantly lit up with bank statements, encrypted email threads, and audio recordings of Henderson and Julian discussing how to permanently silence Charlotte if she ever attempted to return to the city.

The room went tomb-like. Not a single person breathed.
