Chapter 1 - The Silence Before the Storm

The cold marble of the Solmere Hotel lobby bit sharply into Charlotte Vale’s palms, scraping her skin raw as Jessica Sterling hauled her forward by the hem of her worn cotton jacket. The heavy friction of the polished stone sent a dull ache through Charlotte's wrists, but she didn’t cry out. She kept her head down, her dark hair shielding the bruising along her cheekbone and the thin trickle of blood at the corner of her lips.

“Security!” Jessica shrieked, her voice echoing off the vaulted glass ceilings and shattering the subdued, polite murmur of the five-star afternoon crowd. “Someone throw this filthy squatter out into the street before she infects the entire floor!”

A collective gasp rippled through the onlookers. Wealthy investors in bespoke Italian suits, socialites clutching designer leather bags, and concierge staff standing rigidly behind mahogany desks froze in place. No one dared to move. No one dared to question the glamorous woman in the custom white silk gown. Jessica Sterling was royalty in this city—the fiancée of Julian Vance, the rising star of corporate real estate, and the self-appointed queen of the Solmere social circuit.

Except Jessica was standing in a building she didn’t own. A building she was actively helping to steal.

Charlotte’s fingers brushed against her pocket, where her phone was locked securely in recording mode. Every harsh word, every public humiliation, and every security guard currently jogging across the lobby was being streamed directly to a secure, encrypted cloud server managed by her father’s former lead legal counsel.

“You’re making a terrible mistake, Jessica,” Charlotte said, her voice low, steady, and completely devoid of the fear the socialite expected.

Jessica halted, letting go of Charlotte’s jacket with a look of pure disgust, as if she had just touched something foul. She sneered, wiping her manicured hands on a pristine linen handkerchief she snatched from a passing waiter’s tray.

“A mistake?” Jessica laughed, a sharp, brittle sound that grated against the crystal chandeliers. “Look at you! You’re wearing a ten-dollar tank top from a thrift store, your face looks like you crawled out of a back-alley dumpster, and you think I am making a mistake? This is the Solmere Hotel. People like you don't even get to look at the revolving doors without an appointment.”

Footsteps pounded against the marble. Two massive, black-suited security guards skidded to a halt beside Jessica, breathing heavily.

“Get her out of my sight,” Jessica commanded, flicking her wrist toward the glass exit. “And if she tries to come back, break her camera.”
