Chapter 2 - The Guards Who Didn't Move

The lead security guard, a veteran named Thomas who had served under Charlotte’s late grandfather for over twenty years, stepped forward. He looked down at the young woman crumpled on the floor.
For a fraction of a second, Thomas’s eyes widened. He recognized the small silver birthmark just behind Charlotte’s left ear—a distinct mark documented in every family portrait hanging in the private corporate penthouse upstairs. He looked up at Jessica, then back down at Charlotte, whose gaze met his with an icy, piercing intensity.
“Well? What are you waiting for, Thomas?” Jessica snapped, tapping her stiletto heel against the floor. “Grab her arms!”
Thomas didn’t move. Instead, he straightened his posture, squared his shoulders, and slowly turned his back on Jessica Sterling.
Jessica’s jaw dropped. “Are you deaf? I pay your salary! Throw her out right now or you’re fired before you can blink!”
“Ma’am,” Thomas said, his voice deep and completely devoid of its usual subservient tone. “We don’t have the authority to remove guests from the premises without a verified corporate directive.”
“A directive? She’s a vagrant!” Jessica shrieked, her face flushing an angry, mottled crimson. “Look at her face! Look at what she did to the lobby aesthetic!”
Before Jessica could escalate further, the private elevator chime at the far end of the lobby chimed with a crisp, echoing ding.
The gold-plated doors slid open silently.
Stepping out of the private express car—an elevator that required a biometric iris scan and the master cryptographic key held only by the primary board chair—was Arthur Pendelton, the eighty-year-old senior managing partner of the Solmere Trust. Behind him walked three federal marshals and two corporate forensic accountants carrying heavy steel briefcases.
The entire lobby went dead silent. The air seemed to drop ten degrees.
Arthur Pendelton scanned the room with piercing blue eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses. His gaze passed over the wealthy investors, lingered on Jessica Sterling’s terrified expression, and finally locked onto the young woman kneeling on the marble floor.

To the absolute horror of everyone present, the elderly billionaire ignored the red carpet, walked straight past Jessica, and stopped directly in front of Charlotte Vale.
