Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

Two weeks after the hangar confrontation, the autumn chill settled deeply over the cobblestone streets of the old quarter.
Isabella sat in her new executive office on the top floor of the Romano Tower, reviewing global shipping manifests. The transition from living an anonymous life to assuming her rightful place as the heir apparent of the syndicate had been swift, brutal, and absolute. The underworld and corporate worlds alike now spoke her name with a mixture of profound awe and chilling fear.
Yet, peace in a criminal empire is never permanent.
A soft knock interrupted her thoughts. The office door opened, and Uncle Luca stepped inside, holding a thick, cream-colored dossier stamped with a red confidential seal.
“Something came up during the asset seizure audit of Bellini Logistics,” Luca said, placing the dossier on her desk. “We found a series of offshore wire transfers routed through a shell company in Zurich. The ultimate beneficiary wasn't Marco Bellini.”
Isabella looked up, narrowing her eyes. “Who was it?”
“Your former university professor, Dr. Julian Vance—who happens to be Chloe Vance’s uncle,” Luca replied grimly. “And according to these financial trails, they weren't just laundering money. They were actively tracking your personal investments three years before you even met Marco.”
Isabella’s breath hitched. A cold realization washed over her.
Her relationship with Marco hadn't been a chance romance. It had been an engineered setup. Someone had known who she really was—or suspected her true lineage—and had planted Marco in her path to infiltrate the periphery of the Romano inner circle.
“Dig deeper into Dr. Vance’s background,” Isabella commanded, her voice dropping into cold steel. “Find out who financed his research grants and which international syndicates were backing his shell companies.”

“Already on it,” Luca nodded grimly at the door. “Be careful, Isa. If someone is hunting the Romano bloodline, the Bellinis were just the scouts.”
