Chapter 1 - The Price of a Broken Wing

The private hangar at Marco Polo International Airport smelled of high-octane aviation fuel, cold concrete, and absolute panic.

Isabella Romano stood near the tail assembly of the massive Gulfstream G700, her posture ramrod straight, her expression an unreadable mask of chilling calm. She wore a simple charcoal trench coat, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, efficient ponytail. To the casual observer, she looked like a corporate auditor or an insurance investigator caught in the crossfire of a messy upper-class dispute.

She was neither. She was the storm they didn't see coming.

“Look at her, Julian. Just standing there like a mute stone,” Marco Bellini sneered, stepping forward with his chest puffed out like a bantam rooster. He gestured wildly toward the nose of the private jet, where a jagged, expensive scratch marred the pristine white fuselage. “That’s a custom paint job, you little ungrateful peasant! Do you have any idea how much it costs to fix a scratch on a bird like this? And you were the one who authorized the ground clearance check!”

Beside Marco stood Chloe Vance, his executive secretary and current paramour. Chloe wore an artificial, condescending smirk, resting her hand possessively on Marco's arm. Only three months ago, Isabella had been engaged to Marco, foolishly believing his sweet words and social climbing ambitions. She had kept her true family background—her identity as the sole hidden heiress of the ruthless Romano Mafia dynasty—strictly under wraps, hoping to build a normal life based on sincerity rather than blood and bullets.

Instead, Marco and Chloe had used her unassuming demeanor as a weapon. When a freak ground accident nicked the tail of this rented luxury aircraft during an airport logistics mix-up, they immediately pinned 100% of the liability onto Isabella, dragging her out here in front of the elite Bellini family elders to publicly humiliate, fine, and break her spirit.

“It’s four hundred thousand euros, Isabella,” Marco barked, stepping closer into her personal space, towering over her with fake authority. “Four hundred thousand euros for the damage your incompetence caused. Since your little independent design firm doesn't have that kind of liquidity, my family’s legal team has already drawn up the asset forfeiture papers. You sign over your apartment, your savings, and your company stock... or we have you dragged out of here in handcuffs by airport security.”

Chloe giggled softly, a high-pitched, toxic sound. “Honestly, Marco, what did you expect from an orphan with no family name and no pedigree? She thought she could play in the high-stakes world of aviation logistics. Time to pay up, sweetheart.”

Isabella didn't flinch. She slowly lifted her gaze, locking her piercing hazel eyes onto Marco’s face. A faint, humorless smile touched the corners of her lips.

“You want four hundred thousand euros for the scratch on this jet?” Isabella asked, her voice dangerously quiet, cutting through the cavernous hangar like a razor blade.

“That’s right! Cash or collateral, right now!” Marco snapped, snapping his fingers impatiently.

Isabella slowly reached into the deep pocket of her trench coat, pulled out a heavy titanium-encased satellite phone, and pressed a single speed-dial button. She held it to her ear, never breaking eye contact with her treacherous ex-fiancé.

“Uncle Luca,” Isabella spoke clearly into the speaker. “It’s Isa. I’m down at Hangar 4. Some local clowns from the Bellini family are trying to bill me four hundred thousand euros for scratching our tail assembly. Mind telling them whose jet this actually is?”
