Chapter 5 - Shadows at the Door

The mountain safehouse was a fortress disguised as a luxury retreat, equipped with state-of-the-art biometric scanners, reinforced panic rooms, and a private satellite communications array.

By midnight, Mrs. Gable had finally coaxed Lily to sleep in one of the guest suites on the upper level, leaving Chloe alone downstairs in the massive, open-concept kitchen.

She stood by the marble island, holding a mug of chamomile tea, listening to the soft patter of rain against the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the dark expanse of the mountain valley.

Footsteps approached silently across the hardwood floor.

Dante walked into the kitchen, having removed his suit jacket and tie, his crisp white shirt unbuttoned at the collar. He poured himself a glass of scotch, leaning against the counter opposite her.

"She's safe here, Chloe," Dante said, breaking the heavy silence. "No one outside this compound knows this house exists. Not the FBI, and certainly not the remaining factions of the Moretti family."

Chloe looked up, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Remaining factions? I thought you said your enemies were dead."

Dante took a slow sip of his drink, his jaw tightening. "Most of them. But three days ago, a encrypted transmission was intercepted from an offshore server in Zurich. Someone is trying to buy intelligence on my family holdings. Specifically, they're looking for information regarding a missing heir."

Chloe’s mug slipped from her fingers, shattering against the marble floor, hot tea splashing across her shoes.

"They... they know about Lily?" she whispered, her voice trembling violently.

Dante was across the kitchen in a fraction of a second, his hands gripping her shoulders to steady her. "They suspect. They don't have confirmation yet. That's why I had to bring you in tonight, Chloe. The moment you stepped out at that charity gala in Seattle, your cover was compromised. Someone spotted you."

"Who?" Chloe demanded, grabbing the lapels of his shirt. "Who saw me?"

Before Dante could answer, a loud, piercing alarm wailed through the entire mansion.

The soft, warm interior lighting instantly flickered and died, replaced by the harsh, pulsing red glow of the emergency backup system.
