Chapter 2 - The Crimson Trap

The ballroom music swelled into a vibrant waltz, masking the silent, lethal confrontation unfolding near the terrace entrance. Around them, politicians, tech billionaires, and socialites laughed and clinked their glasses, completely oblivious to the apex predator that had just cornered his prey.
Chloe’s heart hammered frantically against her ribs like a trapped bird. He knows, the thought screamed inside her mind. He knows about Mia.
"I don't know what you're talking about, Mr. Salvatore," Chloe managed to say, injecting every ounce of ice she could muster into her voice, pulling back her wrist from his grip. "You have me mistaken for someone else. My name is Clara. I’m a junior archivist for the city museum."
Dante let out a low, humorless chuckle. He didn't step back. Instead, he closed the distance between them, his tall frame entirely blocking her from the view of the surrounding crowd, effectively trapping her between his chest and the heavy velvet drapes.
"Clara Miller," Dante murmured, his voice dripping with smooth, sarcastic mockery as he reached out, his thumb lightly tracing the line of her jawline. Chloe flinched away from his touch, but his grip on her chin tightened just enough to hold her still. "A quiet girl with no digital footprint prior to two years ago. A clean credit score, a rented cottage in the suburbs, and a four-year-old daughter named Lily who happens to have your eyes—and a rare blood type matching mine."
Chloe’s breath hitched. The blood drained entirely from her face.
"Leave her out of this," Chloe hissed, her voice trembling with sudden, fierce maternal panic. "Dante, I swear to God, if you touch her—"
"Touch my own flesh and blood?" Dante cut her off, his blue eyes flashing with a sudden, dark tempest of anger. "You fled while you were carrying my child, Chloe. You made me sit through a phantom funeral, you forced my men to tear apart three states looking for a corpse, and you think I’m going to let you walk away again?"
"Your world is a war zone!" Chloe whispered fiercely, tears pricking the corners of her eyes as she glared up at him. "Every day, rival syndicates are trying to blow up your compounds, assassinate your associates, or use your family as leverage! I didn't fake my death because I hated you, Dante. I did it so your enemies wouldn't use our baby as a bargaining chip in your bloody gang vendettas!"
Dante went completely still. The anger in his eyes flickered, replaced by a dark, dangerous calm. He leaned down, his lips brushing against the shell of her ear, sending a shudder through her entire body.

"My enemies are already dead, Chloe," he whispered softly. "And you are coming home with me tonight. Both of you."
