Chapter 3 - The Ghost’s Refuge

The black bulletproof Mercedes-Maybach cut through the rain-slicked streets of downtown Seattle like a shadow, its tinted windows shutting out the neon glare of the city.
Chloe sat rigidly in the leather-lined back seat, pressed as far against the opposite door as the spacious interior would allow. Dante sat beside her, silent, his arms crossed over his chest, his gaze fixed straight ahead through the glass partition separating them from the driver.
"Where are we going?" Chloe finally broke the silence, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to sound brave. "If you're taking me back to the North End estate—"
"We're going to a private safehouse in the Cascades," Dante interrupted without looking at her. "Until I can ensure that every security protocol around my daughter is absolute."
Chloe turned her head sharply, staring at him in disbelief. "She is not just your daughter! She is mine too! You don't get to just swoop in after three years and—and treat her like property!"
Dante finally turned his head, his cold blue eyes locking onto hers with an unsettling intensity.
"Property?" Dante’s voice was dangerously quiet. "Chloe, look at me. From the moment you walked into my life five years ago, you weren't property. You were the only weakness I ever allowed myself to have. And when you vanished into the ocean, I tore my empire apart looking for you. Do you have any idea what it does to a man to think the only woman he ever loved is lying at the bottom of the sea?"
Chloe swallowed hard, looking away from his piercing gaze. The raw, suppressed pain in his voice caught her off guard. She had always known Dante as a ruthless crime lord—a man who settled business disputes with a flick of his wrist and a silenced pistol. She had never seen the haunted, exhausted man hiding beneath the tailored suit.
"I had no choice," she whispered, her voice cracking. "You were hunting down the Moretti syndicate at the time. Car bombs were going off outside your headquarters. I was pregnant, terrified, and completely alone. If you had known about the baby, your rivals would have targeted her to get to you."
"And instead, you raised her in hiding, terrified every single day," Dante said bitterly, reaching out to catch a stray lock of her black hair, tucking it gently behind her ear. His touch was surprisingly tender, contrasting sharply with the terrifying reputation he carried. "You thought you were protecting her. But you put a target on your own back."

Before Chloe could reply, the car slowed down, turning off the highway onto a private, heavily wooded mountain road hidden behind automated iron gates.
