Chapter 1 - The Echo of a Phantom

The crystal chandelier above the grand ballroom of the Metropole Hotel hummed with a soft, expensive vibration, casting thousands of glittering diamond reflections across the polished mahogany floor. In the center of this sea of high-society opulence, Chloe Vance stood frozen, her fingers clutching the stem of a champagne flute so tightly her knuckles had turned ghostly white.

Three years.

Three years of looking over her shoulder. Three years of jumping at the sound of a screeching car tire, of checking the locks on cheap apartment doors three times before sleeping, of whispering bedtime stories to a little girl with emerald eyes who asked every single night why they had to move again.

She had done everything right. She had used a forged passport, bleached her hair jet-black, cut off all ties with her university friends, and orchestrated a drowning accident off the coast of Maine so convincing that even the federal coroners had signed off on the death certificate.

And yet, here she was.

"Chloe?"

The voice didn't come from behind her. It came from the shadows beside the velvet drapery of the east terrace doors—deep, velvet-smooth, and laced with a quiet, lethal danger that sent an immediate, paralyzing chill straight down her spine.

Chloe didn't turn around. She couldn't. Her muscles had locked up as if she had been struck by liquid nitrogen.

A pair of heavy, custom-tailored leather shoes stepped into her peripheral vision. A tall, imposing figure drifted closer, the faint, intoxicating scent of sandalwood and expensive bourbon cutting cleanly through the heavy air of perfume and roasted lamb.

A gloved hand reached out, gently wrapping long, powerful fingers around her wrist, taking the champagne flute from her trembling grip and setting it down on a passing waiter’s silver tray without breaking eye contact.

"You always did panic under pressure, little bird," Dante Salvatore murmured, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that only she could hear.

Chloe slowly forced her chin up, turning to face him.

Dante had not changed. If anything, the ruthless mafia lord looked even more terrifyingly handsome than he had three years ago. His sharp jawline was shadowed with a faint, dark stubble, his charcoal suit fit his broad shoulders with lethal precision, and his eyes—a striking, glacial shade of ice-blue—were locked onto hers with an intensity that felt like a physical burn.

"Dante," she whispered, her voice barely louder than a breath of wind.

"Did you really think a staged drowning in the Atlantic would keep you away from me?" Dante’s lips curved into a cold, dangerous smile, though his eyes remained dead, hollow, and fixed entirely on her face. "Or did you honestly believe you could take a piece of my blood and hide it in the shadows forever?"
