Chapter 9 - The Media Ambush
The ambush happened on a bright Thursday afternoon outside the sleek glass-and-steel headquarters of Emerald Infrastructure in Manhattan. I was walking out of the lobby with my lead structural engineer, reviewing blueprints for the Arizona municipal water project, when a cluster of aggressive reporters and flashing cameras suddenly swarmed us from behind the hedges.
"Elena Thorne! Is it true your company's municipal water contracts were secured through family payoffs?" a reporter shouted, shoving a microphone uncomfortably close to my face.
"Elena! Address the allegations that your tech firm is a front for unverified medical patents!" another voice barked.
I stopped dead in my tracks. Flashbulbs strobed violently against my eyes, momentarily blinding me. Out from behind the pack of reporters stepped Julian Vance, smirking maliciously, holding a printed stack of forged financial documents.
"She's a fraud," Julian announced loudly to the cameras, playing the role of the righteous whistleblower. "I have documents proving that her multi-million-dollar infrastructure bids were backed by fraudulent medical research grants funneled through the Thorne Medical Foundation. She used her marriage to Silas Thorne to buy her way into the industry while hiding her ongoing medical instability!"
The crowd murmured, hungry for the scandal. The reporters expected me to panic, to shield my face, to break down under the flashing lights just like my mother had planned.
Instead, I looked straight into Julian's video camera lens, adjusted my professional blazer, and smiled calmly.

"Julian Vance," I said, my voice carrying clearly over the chaos of the street. "A man currently facing federal wire fraud charges for embezzling funds from his previous media firm. How much did my mother pay you to wave those fake printouts?"
Julian’s smug smile faltered instantly. The color drained from his face as the surrounding reporters—real investigative journalists who recognized a fraudulent smear campaign when they saw one—suddenly turned their cameras and aggressive questioning back onto him.
