Chapter 23 - Reflections on the Ridge

As autumn rolled around again, painting the Vermont mountains in vibrant shades of copper, crimson, and gold, Silas and I took a quiet evening hike up the ridge overlooking our estate.

The air was crisp and clean, carrying the faint, earthy scent of falling leaves and woodsmoke from our chimney below. We sat together on a smooth granite boulder, watching the last rays of sunlight stretch across the valley.

My life was entirely my own. There were no secrets, no hidden basements, no fear of judgment, and no toxic obligations. Every brick of my personal and professional life had been laid with intention, strength, and love.

"Are you happy, Elena?" Silas asked softly, wrapping his arm around my shoulders and pulling me close against the autumn chill.

I leaned my head on his shoulder, watching the smoke drift lazily from our chimney into the evening sky.

"I've never been happier," I murmured honestly. "I used to think my life was defined by the things my mother tried to strip away from me—my hair, my dignity, my voice, my home. But looking back, I realize those losses were just clearing away the debris so I could build something infinitely stronger."

Silas pressed a tender kiss to the top of my head. "You built a masterpiece, Chief Engineer."

May you like

"We built it together," I corrected him gently, taking his hand.

Down in the valley, our home glowed with warm light through the large glass windows, a beacon of safety, warmth, and unshakeable strength nestled deep within the mountains.
