Chapter 17 - The Final Legal Accord
Arthur’s voice on the speakerphone was calm, professional, and definitive.
"Elena, Silas, I wanted to close the loop on the Vermont property deeds and the civil restitution filings," Arthur stated cleanly. "The county registry has officially sealed all titles under your sole, independent corporate ownership. Furthermore, the court-mandated asset liquidation for Beatrice’s remaining liabilities has concluded. She has no legal standing, claim, or avenue to contest the estate whatsoever."
"And her current living situation?" I asked, keeping my voice level, devoid of malice or triumph—just a pragmatic engineer checking the structural integrity of a closed case.
"She has completed her initial mandated community service hours and remains under strict probation at her senior residence facility on the outskirts of the city," Arthur replied. "Her legal counsel attempted one final motion for financial appeal last week, but the judge dismissed it within ten minutes citing clear evidence of prior fraud and targeted harassment."
"Thank you, Arthur," I said smoothly. "Keep us updated if anything further arises, but I think this chapter is finally, completely closed."
"Will do. Have a wonderful weekend in the mountains," Arthur said before disconnecting the call.
I set the phone down and looked out at the falling snow. For years, I had lived in constant dread of my mother’s next retaliatory move, bracing myself for the next blow, the next insult, the next attempt to drag me back into the shadows. Hearing that her legal avenues were entirely exhausted didn't bring a sense of vindictive joy; it brought something far better: profound, unshakable closure.

"Then let's focus entirely on the future," I smiled, standing up from the desk. "We have a winter engineering symposium to prepare for, and a mountain to explore before dark."
