Chapter 16 - The Blueprint of Peace
The first snow of November blanketed the Vermont mountains in a thick, pristine layer of white, transforming the landscape into a quiet, frozen postcard. Inside our restored timber-framed workshop, however, the atmosphere was humming with high-tech productivity and warmth.
We had officially completed the installation of the northern testing laboratory for Emerald Infrastructure. The glacial stream outside flowed steadily through our newly engineered, solar-powered filtration channels, proving that the classical hydraulic mechanics left behind by my grandfather could be seamlessly merged with modern digital technology.
I sat at the heavy oak workbench, reviewing the architectural schematics for our upcoming municipal water project in the Pacific Northwest. My hands were steady, my mind was sharp, and my dark curls fell loosely around my shoulders, completely free of any wigs, masks, or past insecurities.
Silas walked into the workshop carrying two steaming mugs of hot cocoa, setting one gently beside my keyboard. He leaned over, resting his hands on my shoulders and pressing a warm kiss into my hair.
"The county zoning board just approved our final permit for the winterized research expansion," Silas announced, smiling. "Not a single bureaucratic hurdle left. Your grandfather's workshop is officially a state-of-the-art facility."
I smiled, setting my stylus down and leaning back into his embrace. "It feels surreal to look out that window and see something thriving where there used to be just dust and abandoned blueprints. We actually built something permanent."
