Chapter 21 - The Anniversary

May marked exactly two years since the disastrous wedding day in the glass conservatory—the day my mother tried to strip away my dignity, only to accidentally hand me the microphone that let the world hear my voice.

Instead of hiding or dwelling on the anniversary of that dark moment, Silas and I decided to celebrate how far we had come by hosting an intimate, joyous celebration at our Vermont estate.

We invited the exact same 114 people who had stood up behind us in solidarity that afternoon: Dr. Robert Evans, Sarah Jenkins, our loyal colleagues, brilliant research scientists, and dear friends who had witnessed my darkest moments and celebrated my triumphs.

There were no formal white dresses, no high-society pressures, and no forced expectations. Just long wooden tables set up under the shade of ancient oak trees, laden with gourmet food, fine wine, and endless laughter.

As the sun began to dip below the mountain ridge, casting a breathtaking amber hue across the valley, Dr. Evans stood up from his seat, tapped his wine glass with a silver spoon, and cleared his throat.

"Can I have everyone's attention for just a moment?" Dr. Evans smiled warmly, looking around the table.

The chatter quieted down, and all eyes turned toward him.

"Two years ago today, I sat in a glass conservatory and watched a group of toxic individuals try to humiliate a brilliant young woman who had just beaten cancer," Dr. Evans began, his voice steady and filled with emotion. "I stood up that day because I knew the sheer grit, brilliance, and strength Elena possessed long before anyone else in that room realized it. And looking around this table tonight—seeing what she has built, what she has healed, and how she continues to change the world—I am prouder of her than words can possibly express. To Elena and Silas: a toast to an unbreakable foundation."

"To Elena and Silas!" the entire gathering cheered in unison, glasses clinking together in a chorus of pure, joyous celebration.

Tears of profound gratitude pricked my eyes. I looked across the table at Silas, whose eyes shone with deep, unwavering love.
